A dreamy, atmospheric gem, ‘A Quiet Evening’ reveals its beauty in its brevity. These five piano/strings new tracks build a special and immersive suite, confirming the collaboration between Philip G Anderson and Laura Masotto as a solid artistic partnership, after their contribution to various label Collections with collaborative tracks (‘To Learn and Grow’, Bigo & Twigetti; ‘Waves’, Lady Blunt Records).
The EP was written and recorded in two different locations: Anderson’s home-studio in Covington, Georgia (USA) and the country-side of Bologna were Laura Masotto was temporarly based from March 2020 after returning from her Artist Residency at Fabra I Coats in Barcelona (ES).
The lockdown begins and so does the back and forth of musical ideas between the two musicians. Created during the Covid-19 outbreak and subsequent lockdowns, these tracks flow like the soundtrack of a parallel, intimate dimension.
“I felt trapped knowing that I could not travel and spent most of my time inside my apartment so my connection to the outside world was primarily through music. I spent evenings sitting at my piano playing whatever came to mind, and whatever would distract me from my surroundings. These pieces were born from a stressed and exhausted mind that wanted to connect again with the outside world. Collaborating with Laura was not only musically rewarding, but it also helped provide some semblance of normalcy to life by working with someone else on music again even if it was only through email” says Philip G Anderson. “When Philip asked me to make an EP together, the lockdown had just started in Italy. The situation was really heavy and dramatic. I immediately felt the beauty that this collaboration was carrying. He was at other side of the ocean but we were feeling emotions that were alike, which were conveyed in music. The biggest inspiration was looking the spring blossom outside my window.” continues Laura Masotto.
The title-track, ‘A Quiet Evening’ is the setting for the EP. With lockdowns in place, there was little noise outside and so there was an eerie sense of peace and quiet, which is reflected through all the pieces. Despite the pandemic that had frozen the world outside of our windows, the music they composed sounds peaceful, serene. They seem to gather fragments of memories, framing moments and feelings as the source of their artistic practice. The tracks get to the listener on tiptoe and are capable to reveal the strength that lies in human resilience, within their delicacy. And if we close our eyes, it is beautiful to imagine Laura and Philip with their instruments, so far away yet so close, next to a window, writing these pieces.

I'm on my third listen and this album has real depth. Different passages keep leaping out at me, but I like the way it maintains a characteristic tone while being full of melodic, rhythmic and modal variety and even surprise. Really good. I wish I'd bought the CD. Peter Mason
